The SHC (55 to 385 US tons) is the general purpose series of machines that provides faster operation, higher precision, increased production flexibility and superior mold protection at an easily affordable price.
Injection Unit Features
The improved precision and shot-to-shot repeatability of the SHC’s injection unit are due to many Sumitomo engineering innovations and added features.

On 55 to 88 ton models, closed loop control of velocity and pressure are achieved with Direct Digital Control (DDC) of a variable volume pump with highly sophisticated pressure and flow measuring feedback devices.
The high level of hydraulic system stability on the 110 to 385 ton models is provided by a new Triple Pump System with Direct Digital Servo control technology. The speed and precision of this system offers improved response, shot-to-shot repeatability and injection control (linearity)—from high velocity all the way down to 1% velocity.
Other SHC injection performance features include:
Screw positioning settable to .001 in.
Fine Flow Control screw assembly (55 to 160 ton models) for
superior pressure transmission and easier color change
Fast response PID temperature control settable to .1°F for up
to 6 barrel zones— with 2-second sampling
Auto Slow Down mode that automatically reduces screw
rotation speed at the end of plasticizing
Programmable V/P switchover selectable by position, time
or pressure, for precision filling
Clamping for 110 to 385 Ton Models
For 110 to 385 ton models, the SHC’s hydromechanical clamp design and electronics give molders the advantages of both toggle and direct hydraulic clamp machines by providing:
The separate mold height adjustment (production flexibility)
and faster operation of a toggle
The precision control of tonnage and low pressure mold
protection of a direct hydraulic clamp machine.
For example, decreases in dry cycle time for the SHC compared with its predecessor range from .9 seconds for the 110 ton to 2.3 seconds for the 385 ton. For take-out robots and 3-plate molds, higher precision positioning includes mold protection to .001 in. and mold open stop position accuracy to +/- .01 in.

| High pressure oil is fed to the auxiliary cylinders to advance the moving platen. The rotary shutter quickly rotates 45° to provide a solid column with the guide bars and moving platen. High pressure oil is fed to the main “pancake” cylinder to build tonnage. The rotary shutter opens and oil is fed to the auxiliary cylinders to retract the moving platen. |
The small volume of oil in the main hydraulic cylinder:
Reduces the time to increase/decrease clamp pressure
Lowers oil flow resistance and packing resistance for greater
energy efficiency
Lowers hydraulic oil use

Clamping for 55 to 88 Ton Models
For 55 and 88 ton models, a closed loop, electronically controlled, direct hydraulic clamping system is used. It features:
Precise digital setting and Direct Digital Control (DDC) of
mold open/close positions. DDC detects and compensates
for any overrun during the first three shots of start-up.
Three-stage mold open/close speed control settable on
a percentage basis
Fast response prefill valve for cycle time improvement
Rigidity and durability of the clamp design ensured with
finite element analysis methods
Production Flexibility
To ensure production flexibility, the SHC series was designed with:
Large platens and horizontal tie bar spacing
A large-capacity injection unit
High-Resolution Low-Speed mode
Intrusion molding capability
Hydraulically driven mold height adjustment (110-385 ton models)
N-VII Control
From innovative mold protection features to sophisticated profiling, the N-VII control is designed to be easy to use and to increase your productivity.
With the unique Fail Safe Mold Protection function, “pop-up” screens ensure the proper sequence of operation, reminding the operator to: change the molding conditions if the mold has been replaced, check for over packing, or purge the plasticizing unit.
This feature, combined with 2-level Password Protection, virtually eliminates costly mold damage due to operator error and gives you more control of the production process.
